It’s crazy to think that SSGKobe is only 18 and on his way to becoming a superstar.
Hailing from Louisiana, the rising star hits the scene with his own unique sound, swag and style, redefining what it means to be versatile.
With the ability to transcend genres from hip-hop to R&B to pop, SSGKobe went from killer on the basketball court to killer in the studio, inspired by the greats like Juice WRLD, XXXTentacion and Billie Eilish.
SSGKobe’s name pays homage to his favorite basketball player Kobe Bryant, while SSG stands for Super Saiyan God from Dragon Ball Z. After recording his very first song on his mother’s iPhone 6, uploading it to FL Studio and having paired it with autotune, the rest was history.
Kobe describes himself as “an intelligent, talented and creative artist. I want to do everything: all genres. Hip-hop, pop, just different things.
It was 2018 when he released his first song on SoundCloud, quickly amassing a fan base that is on its way from underground to mainstream. In fact, Lil Tecca even posted his song “Lil Kobe,” which was originally his name, to his Instagram story — later collaborating on the song “All Day.”
Fast forward to 2022, Kobe unveils his new single and visual titled “Don’t Miss”, after his previous bangers “MIA” (directed by Cole Bennett), “F## EM” with Lil Yachty, “ESCAPE YOUR LOVE” , and “4 HOURS OF MAY FREESTYLE.”
AllHipHop: What was it like growing up in Louisiana?
SSG Kobe: I lived in a little neighborhood called Centerville, it’s a very small town. Growing up there, everyone knows what your business is about. Because it’s really small, our population is 400-500 so things can turn around pretty quickly..
AllHipHop: Are they like, “oh s###, SSGKobe is exploding!”
SSG Kobe: I mean, I think they’re super excited, my friends and all.
AllHipHop: Who were you listening to that made you want to make music?
SSG Kobe: Chief Keef with his words made me start rapping, definitely Chief Keef.
AllHipHop: How was it when Lil Tecca posted you on his story?
SSG Kobe: Dude, I was freaking out. I was in a car ride to AAU basketball practice. I was following him, looked at my phone and saw that he posted my song “Lil Kobe” on Youtube. When I saw he posted his story, I freaked out. It was so random.
AllHipHop: How many followers have you had?
SSG Kobe: The thing that ruined everything for me, at the time, my name was Lil Kobe. That’s what it said on my Youtube, but then I changed it to SSG so everyone was looking for Lil Kobe. However, it gave me a lot of traction.
AllHipHop: Why did you change your name?
SSG Kobe: Honestly, I love Super Saiyan. I love Dragon Ball Z, I love anime. Kobe was my favorite player so I had to wear that name. I just changed it to SSG because that was when I started getting into anime seriously.
AllHipHop: What do you like in anime?
SSG Kobe: Personally, I’ve always loved cartoons. Even the more regular ones growing up, like Courage the Cowardly Dog. The Cartoon Network shows, then I found the anime. I’m like, this s### is way better.
AllHipHop: You were playing basketball. What happened with your trainer?
SSG Kobe: Not to confuse him with my second coach, Coach Taylor, yell at him. Both coaches have been with me since I couldn’t even dribble. They definitely taught me what I know today. I played AAU for a year and then moved on to music because I saw I could do it.
AllHipHop: Were you nice to that?
SSG Kobe: Yes, of course.
AllHipHop: Are you still playing?
SSG Kobe: I play pickup.
AllHipHop: Talk about Kaash Paige reaching out, she’s my daughter!
SSG Kobe: It happened because I was on SoundCloud and heard “Euphoria”. I hit her in the DM like “that’s crazy”. I didn’t think she would answer. She replied, we started having a convo. I showed her my song and she said “man, I want you on my project”. She sent me this open and I made it at home.
AllHipHop: How was this experience?
SSG Kobe: It was fire. This confused me because I didn’t think she would answer honestly.
AllHipHop: What was it like shooting “MIA” with Cole Bennett? It is enormous!
SSG Kobe: Cole is a great guy. The set, the themes of the different scenes, it was all fun. An unforgettable experience.
AllHipHop: Your best filming memory?
SSG Kobe: I’m probably kidding Cole. We play, just kidding with Cole.
AllHipHop: Were these real bugs? It’s terrifying !
SSG Kobe: They were real insects. [laughs] At first I was terrified. But then I’m like, “This is going to come out of the fire.”
AllHipHop: “Don’t miss” now! What excites you the most?
SSG Kobe: Crazy video. It is based on magic with wands. It is a disc lit and turned. I usually don’t drop many. I know my fans and supporters will be excited because they don’t really get too much music from me. It’s a big moment for me, I like it.
AllHipHop: What do you want fans to take away from your story?
SSG Kobe: It’s okay to be authentic. Even if you see other people saying “fuck I want to be like them”, just know that the world hasn’t seen you yet. They may like the same things you see in another person, who you think are cool, but being genuine and relatable is important. Because we really are all the same.
AllHipHop: You started making music around 2016. How was it to be signed so young?
SSG Kobe: I didn’t know I would sign until I was 18. I didn’t think my career would do what it did. It’s a fun experience that teaches you different things, learning the business side of music. It is a learning experience.
AllHipHop: What prompted you to join Columbia Records?
SSG Kobe: I felt out of all the labels I visited, I felt more comfortable with Columbia. They rule the charts. They also have some of my favorite artists under their label.
AllHipHop: How did you bond with Lil Yachty on “F## EM”?
SSG Kobe: We had the song, we were working on the song. I recorded my verse at home, then sent it to my engineer who mixed it and went crazy. We released it for Rolling Loud New York. We were trying to put together a video, but our schedules didn’t really match. We were both going to be in New York for Rolling Loud so as soon as I landed we shot the video. We did it in 3 or 4 takes. They edited it and it came out great. It’s on.
AllHipHop: I feel like a lot of blessings are coming your way, are you spiritual at all?
SSG Kobe: I really feel like I have a long way to go. I’m definitely a beginner.
AllHipHop: 3 things you need in the studio?
SSG Kobe: Water, snacks and TV with Netflix. Wear it, anything. Movies, series, anything.
AllHipHop: What inspires you the most when recording?
SSG Kobe: I think about where I started, where I am now. Just to continue.
AllHipHop: What are your best anime of all time?
SSG Kobe: Attack on Titan, Death Note, The Promised Neverland and Leech. This is my little list.
AllHipHop: Your best encounter with a fan?
SSG Kobe: I went to a concert in Orlando for the Autumn tour. One of the fans there, they really didn’t know I was going with them. When I got on stage, everyone started going crazy. In the end, we were all out. Fan, she started crying and she was shaking. So I took a picture with her, and I signed her phone case.
AllHipHop: At only 18, what do you like to do for fun?
SSG Kobe: I like hanging out with my friends, recording and playing basketball.
AllHipHop: Anyone want to collaborate with?
SSG Kobe: There are a few actually. I want to work with Olivia Rodrigo, The Kid LAROI, Don Toliver and Playboi Carti.
AllHipHop: Can we hope for a project?
SSG Kobe: Sure. I released my first project this year. I’m still debating the name. I was going to go with Euphoria and spell it U4EYA. I feel like Euphoria is a unique word, just change it.
AllHipHop: What do your tattoos mean?
SSG Kobe: [pulls out forearm] I have this one, it’s a Nirvana angel. I got this one because of Kurt Cobain. This one, honestly, I don’t even remember. It’s a butterfly. I also have a black cat with orange. My whole aesthetic is that of black cats, so I just had to stamp it. But I’m done with tattoos.
SSG Kobe: I’m not too sure, I think at least for now I’m done. I like tattoos, I like having them too. I only have them on my arm, I don’t think these hurt too much.
AllHipHop: Are you setting goals as an artist at this stage of your career?
SSG Kobe: New year, I want to stay focused. I want to get into the Billboards, at least into the Top 10 this year. I hope to work with one of the artists I named. I want to have a successful project.
AllHipHop: Do you have anything else to tell us?
SSG Kobe: I have some features on the project. Any new music is a whole new me. Before you listen and dive into it, think of it as me growing up. It is certainly a big step forward. You can tell in the lyrics and the beats, the flows, the cadences, all that.
AllHipHop: Are we going to get pop records from you?
SSG Kobe: Yeah absolutely. I have one on my project I’m currently working on. Everything is versatile. That’s what I say, it’s going Platinum.
