The recent conviction of Derek Chauvin was a well-received demonstration of responsibility in a world where there has been a seemingly blatant attack on black lives. However, the recent assassinations of Daunte Wright and Andrew Brown Jr. show that there is much to be done in terms of social justice in this country. The injustice protests in America have called into question the lack of fairness in many aspects of our daily lives, including STEM education.

There is a significant lack of equity and access in STEM education, with major barriers to entry for black students. The most recent data is from 2018, but shows stark contrasts for the black community represented in STEM. On average, about 238 out of 100,000 U.S. residents hold a bachelor’s degree in STEM. For the black community, only 161 inhabitants out of 100,000 hold such diplomas.

Branden Thompson, Founder of the Back at Zero Foundation, uses his platform to educate youth about financial literacy, entrepreneurship and offers 5 HBCU students the opportunity to earn $ 10,000 each for their STEM education.

“After I graduated from an HBCU, I remember the financial hardships I had to endure to continue my education, and now that I am able to help others financially, I wanted to offer an opportunity to help. other people who may find it difficult to stay. at school. I would like to inspire young people to believe in their natural gifts and talents so that they can make their dreams come true, ”he says.

Through his own experience, Thompson gets the job done to help others. “After high school I attended Hampton University in Virginia, but due to lack of financial support and access, I had to transfer to Prairie View, a smaller HBCU located closer to my town. native of Houston, ”says Thompson. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering due to the financial security he felt he could offer and began his career at Boeing Company. After four years of working in the corporate world, Branden felt he was not realizing his full potential and felt he was better suited for entrepreneurship. He co-founded TradeHOUSE, a wealth management and investment organization with a “mission to teach young adults business skills to invest in cryptocurrency.”

Heavily influenced by basketball and its coaches who instilled the values of “unity, hard work and consistency” and inspired by his single mother, a fellow entrepreneur and barber shop owner, Branden wanted more than what the corporate world was to offer, and more, to share it with others – freedom. This is exactly what he was able to do and goes even further to ensure that college students have more financial support for their studies and to explore their many talents.

After achieving such a level of success with cryptocurrencies, Branden decided to pursue his hidden passion for music, and his alter ego “Sir Trilli” was born. Her first single, “Shake the Bank,” premiered in March of this year with the first video airing on BET Jams. “My music is about financial literacy in a fun and musical way,” says Thompson.

Branden’s goal is to empower people to control their own destiny through financial literacy, whether through his music or his organization. When asked what the future holds, Branden’s response is not surprising. Its objective is to “[meld] the financial and music industries to spread financial literacy to the world.

Thompson’s advice to young people who work hard to achieve their goals: “Don’t listen to people who don’t have the results or the lifestyle you want; listen to your inner voice and go your own way.
